Waiting time.
I’ve got to that horrible stage of waiting to see if anyone is interested in being my subject. After putting together what seems like a good idea through both discussion and research I’ve started to push it but have been told I’ll have to wait and see.
First of all I’ve moved onto the Aylesbury Estate after watching the welders on the Haygate board up flat after flat and feeling the people there are in a complete state of flux. I’ve gone with the thought that almost all human life revolves around work in some form. The places people live, the education they receive, the clothes they wear, the food they eat and so on can all be related to what they or their family do (or don’t do) as a job.
The Aylesbury has a huge migrant population from various backgrounds and I’ve been told face a number of problems both in the work they are able to find and the effect this has on their family. Almost all of them are working for both their family’s here and in the country they came from. Due to problems such as language they are working for low-wages and so also end up working very long hours. For a family this can mean parents and children don’t see each other as much as they should – leaving children to their own devices and in many cases the parental responsibility of looking after the home and younger kids. This as you can imagine could lead to current and future problems but it also opens the door to consider a family life and responsibility that few people in the West have to experience.
All interesting stuff I feel and tenants and organisations on the estate that I’ve talked to seem to feel the same. However the hunt is on for a family willing to let a scruffy Geordie into their lives for a number of weeks and its absolute agony waiting…
